Sandro Nebieridze - Biography

”The New Horowitz, in every sense of the word: stupendous technique, breathtaking tonal sensibility, captivating and surprising timing, and exciting rhythm” (Myscena),

”The red light clearly holds no terrors for him as he relishes the full sonority of a richly voiced instrument” (Gramophone)

For Sandro Nebieridze, music transcends the boundaries of interpretation and creation — it is a single, living language. As both a classical music composer and pianist, he moves effortlessly between the stage and the writing desk, shaping sound with the same intensity whether performing classical repertoire or unveiling his own works.

Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, Nebieridze began his musical journey at the age of five. From early on, his dual passion for composition and performance as a classical music composer was evident, leading him to take lessons in both piano and composition under the guidance of professors Lali Sanikidze and Maka Virsaladze.

After graduating from the Musical Seminary of the Tbilisi State Conservatoire, he furthered his education at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire before refining his artistry at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich with Antti Siirala and at the Fondazione Accademia di Imola with Boris Petrushansky. These influential traditions have shaped his musical voice, characterized by intellectual clarity and emotional depth.

International recognition followed early in his career. He has garnered acclaim as a prizewinner in major competitions, including the recent 2nd Prize & Junior Jury prize at the 65th Ferruccio Busoni International Competition (2025), 1st prize at the Steinway Förderpreis (2025), 2nd prize at the Kissinger Klavierolymp (2021), and the Grand Prix at the Grand Piano Competition (2016), among others. Yet beyond these distinctions, it is the expressive scope of his playing—often described as both architecturally powerful and poetically intimate—that truly defines his artistic identity as a pianist.

His debut album, dedicated to Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev, was released worldwide in 2019 by Harmonia Mundi. This album, recognized for its excellence, won the Georgian Tsinandali Prize and was nominated for Opus Klassik. As a prominent classical music composer and pianist, his concert life has since taken him across Europe, where he has performed with esteemed orchestras such as the Norwegian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Staatskapelle Dresden, Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra, and the PCYO. He has collaborated with renowned conductors including Gianandrea Noseda, Petr Popelka, George Pehlivanian, Beatrice Venezi, Rory Macdonald, and many others. A regular guest at major international festivals—such as Kissinger Sommer, Tsinandali Festival, Mozart@Augsburg, Delft Chamber Music Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Festival d’Auvers-sur-Oise, and Encuentro Santander—Nebieridze exemplifies a generation of musicians where technical brilliance enhances a deeper artistic vision in the world of classical music.

Parallel to his performing career, composition remains central to Nebieridze’s artistic world as a distinguished classical music composer. His catalogue ranges from piano compositions and chamber music to two piano concertos and various symphonic works, including an opera and a ballet. His music has been premiered in prestigious venues such as Dresdner Kulturpalast, Tsinandali amphitheatre, P. Tchaikovsky Concert hall, Konzerthaus Berlin, and Berlin Philharmonie, while receiving numerous awards, including national prizes for his Piano Concerto No. 1 and Piano Trio “The Elements,” along with international recognition for his Toccata in Vienna.

In 2025, Genuin Classics released his new album with violist Ionel Ungureanu, recorded at the Bayerische Rundfunk studio. The program bridges tradition and invention: Bloch’s Suite, the first recording of Jaromir L. Hruška’s Sonata, and their joint composition “Tunisian Rhapsody,” inspired by Dizzy Gillespie — a work that reflects Nebieridze’s openness to dialogue across styles and eras.

Supported by the Lisa Batiashvili Foundation and the Martha Pulvermacher Foundation, Sandro Nebieridze, known for his captivating pianist biography, continues to tour around Europe, working on commissioned compositions and bringing his exotic musical identity to various stages around the world.
